Last summer Audur Jonsdottir, Freyja Filmwork productions and Audurs Foreign Rights agent signed a letter of intent to make a movie based on Grand Mal. Margret Örnolfsdottir (former Sugarcube) will be one of two writers working on the project.
Grand mal was not only the absolute bestseller of the 2015 Christmass season, it also won The Icelandic Booksellers’ and the Icelandic Radio Writers Fund Prize (RUV) and was nominated for two other prizes.
“I am quite happy and grateful for being trusted to do this,” Producer/Director Tinna Hrafnsdottir said in a brief interview with Morgunbladid. “This is a very strong story and the way the author tells the story makes it ideal for the silver screen. Getting Margret Ornolfdottir on the team was also quite a catch.”
Grand Mal is not the only movie project being planed from Audur books. Internationaly known Producer/Director Baltasar Kormakur has been paying for an option do the People In The Basement since 2012 and Askja films are well under way with a script based on Deposit, shooting being scheduled to begin in 2017.
